Platform reporting is not the same as tax — but sourcing for profit can be trading.

Selling your own unwanted possessions is different from repeatedly buying stock to resell for profit. HMRC says platform reporting does not automatically mean tax is due, but buying or making goods to sell for profit is likely to be trading.

THE SHORT ANSWER

If you regularly buy from charity shops, car boots, wholesalers or other sources intending to resell for more, HMRC says you may be trading. Keep records from day one.

HMRC’s current guidance says if total trading income is more than the £1,000 trading allowance for the tax year (6 April to 5 April), you need to tell HMRC. The £1,000 figure relates to gross trading income, not “£1,000 profit”. This page is general information, not personal tax advice.

Do this in order

Separate the tax questions in the right order.

1

Ask whether you are trading

Intent and pattern matter. Clearing a wardrobe is different from sourcing items with the intention of resale profit.

2

Add up gross trading income

For the trading-allowance check, follow HMRC’s definition and use the tax year, not merely a marketplace calendar-year total.

3

Keep costs and evidence

Item cost, platform fees, postage, packaging, mileage/other allowable business expenses and refunds need records if relevant to your accounting method.

4

Do not confuse platform reporting with tax due

Digital platforms may report seller information to HMRC under reporting rules. HMRC explicitly says this does not automatically mean you owe tax.

5

Use HMRC or an accountant for your circumstances

Registration, allowable expenses, losses, VAT and accounting choices can depend on facts beyond a generic guide.

Personal possessions versus trading stock

HMRC says you are unlikely to pay tax simply because you sell personal items from home. But if you buy or make goods to sell at a profit, you are likely to be trading. A reseller sourcing stock specifically for resale should treat record keeping as a business function, not an afterthought.

The £1,000 trading allowance is commonly misunderstood

The current HMRC online-platform checker says that if total trading income is more than £1,000 for the tax year, you need to tell HMRC. Do not substitute “profit” for “income” when using that threshold.

Why MyCost tracks item-level numbers

Marketplace annual totals do not tell you which stock was profitable, what it cost or how much cash remains tied up. Item-level acquisition cost and sale data make year-end reconciliation much easier, but MyCost does not replace professional tax advice.

MyCost decision rule

If you source stock with the intention of making regular profit, behave like a business record-keeper before you need the records.

FAQ
Does Vinted or eBay reporting me to HMRC mean I owe tax?

No. HMRC explicitly says platform reporting does not automatically mean tax is due. Whether you owe tax depends on the nature of your activity and your tax circumstances.

Is the £1,000 trading allowance based on profit?

HMRC’s online-platform guidance refers to total trading income. Do not treat the £1,000 threshold as £1,000 of profit.

If I only sell my old clothes, am I trading?

Not necessarily. HMRC distinguishes selling personal possessions from buying or making goods with the intention of selling for profit.
