Plain-English reseller metrics

Know exactly what your numbers mean.

Resellers use the same words to mean different things. This glossary gives MyCost’s working definitions and flags the terms that need a stated denominator, cohort or accounting method.

Acquisition cost

What you paid to acquire the individual item, or the allocated share of a bundle/bale cost.

ASP (Average Selling Price)

Total sales revenue divided by number of items sold for the defined period/population.

COGS / cost of goods sold

The cost assigned to inventory that has been sold. Accounting treatment can differ; use professional advice for formal accounts.

Dead stock

Stock that has aged without a clear commercial plan or realistic route to sale; not simply “anything older than X days”.

Days to sell

Time between the start point you define — usually listing or stock-entry date — and sale date.

GMV

Gross merchandise value: headline value of goods sold before many deductions. It is not net profit.

Landed cost

Purchase cost plus the costs required to get stock into sellable possession, depending on the definition used by your business.

Margin

Profit expressed as a percentage of revenue. State whether you mean gross or net margin.

Maximum buy price

The highest acquisition price compatible with your expected sale, costs and target profit.

Net profit

Money remaining after the costs included in your defined profit calculation. Label which costs are included.

Profit floor

Minimum net profit or sale price you require before accepting an offer/markdown.

Relist

Create/refresh a selling attempt after deliberately reviewing the listing; avoid duplicate active marketplace listings where prohibited.

ROI

Return on investment. In reseller sourcing this is often profit divided by stock cost, but definitions vary — label the denominator.

Sell-through rate

The share of a defined stock population that sold during/by a defined period. Always state cohort and window.

Stale stock

Inventory old enough to trigger review under your chosen age rules, such as 30/60/90 days.

True profit

A practical item-level profit view that includes acquisition and relevant direct selling/fulfilment costs instead of sale price minus purchase price only.

Turnover / revenue

Sales income before profit deductions. High turnover can coexist with weak profit.

Definitions are useful. Consistent tracking is better.

MyCost keeps the same item cost, sale and stock-age definitions attached to your inventory.
