Vintage label field guide

Vintage adidas Labels & Tags:
Dating guide.

adidas has used many regional and product-line labels, so a logo alone is not enough. Trefoil, Equipment and Performance branding can narrow an era, but care tags, article numbers and construction should confirm the estimate.

CORE RULE

Old-looking label ≠ exact date ≠ value.

Use the label to create a likely era, then make the rest of the garment prove or disprove it.

Y2K pieces may use either heritage Trefoil or Performance systems; article/product coding becomes more useful.

Cross-check these clues

A credible date estimate should survive several independent checks. If the neck label and care label disagree, stop and investigate instead of choosing the older answer.

Look for

  • Trefoil vs Equipment vs Performance logo
  • Article/product number and care-label format
  • Country of manufacture
  • Woven vs printed label construction
  • Zip pull and branded hardware
  • Football/club sponsor and kit-season details

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Trefoil means 1980s — adidas still uses it
  • Ignoring modern reissues of classic designs
  • Dating football shirts from the neck tag alone
  • Treating one product-code format as universal across every region

How to list it when the date is not certain

Use wording such as “likely late 1980s / early 1990s based on label and construction” rather than inventing an exact year. Separate confirmed facts from estimates. For valuable branded items, authenticity deserves a separate check from age.
