Nike did not publish a complete official neck-tag timeline, so most colour-era charts are specialist/community reconstructions. Use them as supporting evidence, then cross-check care tags, garment construction, product codes and country of manufacture.

Pinwheel / early Nikelate 1970s–early 1980s

Community estimate

Early branding associated with the Pinwheel era. High collector interest can exist, but the label must fit the whole garment.

Orange-label eralate 1970s–early 1980s

Often discussed alongside early Nike sportswear. Typography and label construction vary.

Cross-check these clues

A credible date estimate should survive several independent checks. If the neck label and care label disagree, stop and investigate instead of choosing the older answer.

Exact Nike logo/wordmark proportions
Care label language and fibre content
Country of manufacture
Product/style code format where present
Stitching, zip/hardware and cut
Team/event/licensing dates on graphics

Common mistakes

Calling every orange tag “1970s” without checking the garment
Using tag colour as an exact year
Assuming Made in USA automatically means rare/valuable
Ignoring a modern care tag that contradicts an old-looking neck label

How to list it when the date is not certain

Use wording such as “likely late 1980s / early 1990s based on label and construction” rather than inventing an exact year. Separate confirmed facts from estimates. For valuable branded items, authenticity deserves a separate check from age.
