Vintage T-Shirt Tags: Screen Stars, Hanes, Oneita, Giant & More
Dating guide.
T-shirt tags are powerful pattern-recognition tools because many printers used third-party blanks. But the tag dates the blank family, not automatically the graphic. A blank can sit before printing, and a valuable graphic can appear on a very ordinary tag.
Old-looking label ≠ exact date ≠ value.
Use the label to create a likely era, then make the rest of the garment prove or disprove it.
What the label can realistically tell you.
Union Underwear/Fruit of the Loom precursor clue; RN itself is not a date.
Early Screen Stars period; variants overlap.
Very common vintage print blank; use exact tag variant.
Later Screen Stars family with overlap into 1990s.
Exact logo/layout is essential; “Hanes” alone is far too broad.
Useful precursor/early Anvil tag family.
Long range; exact variant needed.
Common quality vintage blank family.
Numerous variants; cross-check construction/country.
Very desirable on some music/licensed graphics; the graphic drives value.
Long span makes tag variant/care details important.
Useful licensed/music blank clues; exact tag needed.
Cross-check these clues
A credible date estimate should survive several independent checks. If the neck label and care label disagree, stop and investigate instead of choosing the older answer.
Look for
- Exact tag layout, not just blank brand
- RN number/company identity without treating it as a date
- Single vs double stitching in context
- Fabric blend and weight
- Made-in country
- Copyright/licensing line
- Print method and feel
- Side seams vs tubular construction
Common mistakes
- “Single stitch = 1980s” as a universal rule
- “Made in USA = valuable”
- Using RN 13765 as a production year
- Calling every Screen Stars tag the same date
- Dating a concert print solely from the blank
How to list it when the date is not certain
Use wording such as “likely late 1980s / early 1990s based on label and construction” rather than inventing an exact year. Separate confirmed facts from estimates. For valuable branded items, authenticity deserves a separate check from age.
We prefer official marketplace/government material for rules and tax, and clearly label specialist/community evidence where no official dating archive exists.
